I'm from Sydney and I've approached several different US brokers asking if Australian residents can short stocks and each one has told me due to some BS regulation that we can’t. Hi Mark. The only U.S. brokerage that will allow you to trade U.S. equities as an Aussie resident is IB. I heard ETrade is now in Oz, so check with them. I have no idea about Aussie brokers. I know that the commissions are outrageous and I'm not sure about margin rules, etc. Stick to a U.S. broker if you can get one. WIth IB, you can trade on the ASX if you like. Cheers, Mike
