what i have learned is you cannot predict which stock is breaking out and when ? sometimes stock runs for no reason and sometimes for a contract , FDA , earning reports etc . What Tim showed us we can dip buy them and still make decent profit . However , you can always check pre-market and after-market and see how market reacts to a news . I hope it helps

if a stock has good earnings, it tends to move up based on technical analysis for a few days. So for instanc, in company ABC has a good earnings report on monday, it will likely spike again some time in the week. Now you have to watch the stock. News makes you watch a stocK, technical analysis makes you trade it.
